Master of Business Administration Degree Program

By considering the passionate response by the private and public sectors, the Department of Business Management of the Faculty of Business Studies and Finance launched Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes in 2005 with the noble purpose of expansion of indigenous knowledge to promote the sustainable development of Sri Lanka. Above postgraduate diploma and degree programmes strive to develop conceptual, analytical, methodological, and communication skills in modern theory and practice in each of the key areas of Business Administration. Accordingly these programmes are specially targeted at managers at middle level and lower level of businesses and commercial enterprises in Sri Lanka.

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDBM) leading to the degree in Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Introduction to the programme of study

Programe of study runs through two academic years and it is in two parts namely Part-I and Part- II.

Part – I of the Programme: Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDBM)

In the first academic year (part – I) participants follow course work. All courses are compulsory. Each course composes of 30 hours of student contact hours. The academic year consists of three (03) terms. A total of twelve (12) courses is completed during the year in addition to the individual project (project – feasibility study report), which is to be completed and submitted at the end of the 3rd term of the first academic year.

Part – II of the Programme: Master in Business Administration (MBA)

In the second academic year (part- II) the participants devote their time to complete a management research under the guidance of supervisors appointed by the University. In addition to the research project, they have to attend a series of advanced seminars organized by the Board of study –Master of Business Administration..

The Objective of the Programme

The objective of the PGDBM leading to MBA programme is to provide participants with an advanced knowledge in Business Management enabling them to be effective and efficient in their respective organizations.

Duration of the Programme

Duration of the Post graduate Diploma in Business Management is one year (12 months). The minimum period of study required of a candidate to complete the PGDBM programme is one year (12 months) while the maximum period allowed is five years. A candidate required to earn a total of twenty four (24) credits through course work inclusive of a project report during the period of study.

Those who complete at the requirements of the PGDBM may be admitted to the 2nd year of the programme which leads to the MBA.
Selection will be based on merits and availability of places. The participants who gain admission to the second year of the programme which leads to the MBA is not eligible for the award of a Diploma Certificate.

Those who selected to follow the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree (2nd year of the programme) must earn a total of sixteen (16) credits though;

  • Eight (08) credits through two taught courses and
  • Eight (08) credits through the research component.

  • The medium of instruction is English

Curriculum for Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDBM)
This programme of study is based upon the assumption that learning is an active process of the dissemination of knowledge. Its success will therefore depend on the willingness of course participants to take an active part.

The lectures delivered on the subjects of the PGDBM are highly comprehensive and they provide only the broad conceptual framework and theoretical models. Hence, the candidates are required to participate in discussions and seminars in addition to the classroom lectures conducted by the Department of Business Management of the Faculty of Business Studies & Finance. They are required to work on their own, to read widely, and to develop their studies within the broad framework provided through lectures and instructions of the course lecturers throughout.

Master of Business Administration Admission Requirements
The candidates with the following qualification/s are eligible to apply for the admission to the PGDBM programme.

1. A Bachelor’s degree with First or second Class honours, in Business Administration/ Public Administration/ Management/ Commerce/ Estate Management & Valuation/ Accountancy & Financial Management/ Economics/ Engineering or relevant fields obtained from a recognized University.
or

2. A Bachelor’s degree obtained from a recognized University with at least three years of post –qualifying experience in an executive capacity.
or

3. A recognized professional qualification with a minimum of three years’ post qualifying professional experience in an executive capacity.
or

4. Senior management of business/ public/professional acceptable to the senate of the University. This will be considered on the case basis.

Recognized Professional Qualification

  • The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL)- AMIE/MIE

  • The Institution of Incorporated Engineers, Sri Lanka (IIESL)- MIIE

  • The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)- ACMA/ FCMA

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICASL)- ACA/FCA

  • The Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK)- CIM

  • The Chartered Institute of Bankers (UK)- Membership

  • The Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL)- Membership

  • Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA)- AIA

  • The Engineering Council (UK)- CEng

  • NDT or Equivalent with 10 years of post qualifying experience

5. Other professional qualifications may be considered doe admission of candidates to the programme subject to the approval of the Senate.
